Migration and survival of smolt, post-spawning (kelt) and adult Atlantic salmon in hydropower regulated Saint John River, New Brunswick.

The project will examine survival and success of migration of Atlantic salmon through 96 km long Mactaquac reservoir, situated upstream of the Mactaquac Generating Station (MGS) in the Saint John River (SJR). The project is a part of larger research Mactaquac Aquatic Ecosystem Study consortium evaluating the options for the future of MGS that is nearing the end of its service life. The migration success through the reservoir, and subsequently in the riverine part downstream by Atlantic salmon is not known. To help preserve Atlantic salmon in the SJR, migration success and the parameters controlling it must be explicitly understood so that the information weights in when the options for the future of MGS are being considered (dam removal or dam renewal).
