Using Education, Engagement, and Signage to Conserve Wild Atlantic Salmon and Salmon Habitat in Bay St. George and other Areas of Newfoundland

Recipient: Intervale
Approved Amount: $40,949
Year Approved: 2019

Intervale and its partners, including First Nations, will implement the “Living Rivers” initiative for the second year, with objectives to encourage reports of illegal fishing of Atlantic salmon, prevent threats to salmon habitat, teach best practices, and educate the public about the importance of salmon conservation in Newfoundland. Core activity is in Bay St. George, where populations are declining, with expansion across the Province. Intervale will post an additional 50 signs, give 25 presentations to adult and youth groups, and present fly-tying workshops. The project will expand by creating a portable display, and two newsletters. The project will measure outcomes by increased numbers of people engaged; exit surveys demonstrating increased knowledge; increased reporting of poachers; fewer salmon poached; less dumping of waste in rivers; and eventually to improvements in salmon populations.
