Perpetuation of Atlantic Salmon in Northeastern PEI

Recipient: Souris & Area Branch of the PEI Wildlife Federation
Approved Amount: $26,500
Year Approved: 2015

SAB will restore and further enhance existing Atlantic salmon habitat in North Lake, Priest Pond, Cross, Hay, Bear, Naufrage and Cow Rivers by installing brush mattresses and ensuring fish passage by trimming alders and removing “blow-downs”, natural blockages and any non-active beaver dams. Throughout this 3 year project, SAB will increase and enhance Atlantic salmon habitat by opening up access  to an additional 1 km in the tributaries of Priest Pond and Naufrage Rivers and by a minimum of 0.5km in each of the main branches of Cow, Hay, Cross and Bear Rivers.

SAB will establish monitoring stations in each watershed obtaining baseline data on water temperatures, water quality, fish density, substrate composition and spawning dates.

SAB will continue with their public awareness of the plight of Atlantic salmon through classroom presentations at Souris Regional School, distribution of quarterly newsletters, public meetings and regular postings on social media, website and traditional media.
