Passekeag Creek enhancement project

In 2020 the KWRC will continue with an effort to establish restoration sites in our lower watershed. Passekeag Creek, a crucial tributary in the lower watershed, provides recreational opportunities to those living in and around Hampton, NB. Our goals in 2020 are to improve fish passage and habitat connectivity on the Creek while also improving riparian zone habitats so that stream temperatures are buffered during warmer summer periods. This will greatly enhance salmon and trout habitat in the Creek and allow them to more readily access refuge habitat and escape possible predation from larger fish species that frequent the lower Kennebecasis (i.e. small mouth bass, pickerel.) By removing up to 3 fish passage barriers and planting degraded riparian zones, KWRC will improve salmonid habitat within the creek and mitigate rising stream temperatures which were identified in the 1994 Habitat survey as the two limiting factors to watershed health on the Kennebecasis. The KWRC will also work with the NB Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (NBDTI), as they are the owner of most culverts, to secure their support, engage them in the project and coordinate culvert remediation.
