Mushamush River Habitat Restoration project

Recipient: Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation
Approved Amount: $14,631
Year Approved: 2008

The Mushamush River has been extensively utilized by the residents of Mahone Bay for industrial and recreational benefit since the late 1800’s. Over the past two centuries, this river has been the site for numerous sawmills, gristmills, log drive operations, and dams to harness electrical power. The Mushamush River’s prosperous contributions to the local economy have come at the high cost of extensive degradation leaving a legacy of environmental damage; reductions in salmonid numbers and in the watershed’s ability to support such populations. Accordingly, the purpose of the Mushamush River Habitat Restoration Project is to enhance the ability of the river to support salmonid populations by building and maintaining restoration structures that improve fish habitat.
