Monitoring the migration dynamics of Atlantic salmon in the Jacques-Cartier River
The CBJC aims to implement an acoustic telemetry program to track approximately twenty migrating juvenile salmon in order to better understand their use of key habitats in the Jacques-Cartier River. Thanks to existing infrastructure, capturing and tagging the fish will be easier, while monitoring will help confirm the use of pools, spawning grounds, and thermal refuges. In collaboration with the Wendat Nation and Jacques-Cartier National Park, habitat characterizations using drones will be conducted, and protective measures may be proposed based on the results. Scale sampling will also provide biological data useful for documenting the proportion of multi-spawners. The project ultimately aims to improve population management by confirming the use of key habitats, documenting movements, expanding post-spawn knowledge, and raising awareness among water stakeholders about the migratory dynamics of Atlantic salmon.
