Midgell River Salmon Habitat Rehabilitation, Protection and Conservation Phase II

Recipient: Abegweit Conservation Society
Approved Amount: $12,475
Year Approved: 2017

2015, and especially 2016 saw great progress in the battle to re-establish the lentic to lotic balance within the stream habitat of the Midgell River Watershed. Inroads have been made to get beaver impacts on habitat under control, mostly due to the drawdown of Pius MacDonald’s Pond and the hiring of a designated trapper. This project will continue to maintain the focused effort on establishing control over beaver population and dam impacts. Activities will include the hiring of trappers and persisting with the consistent and continuous restoration methods over the next two years tailored to address habitat degradation from impoundments, natural and manmade, on the entire Midgell Watershed. The sections above Pius MacDonald’s pond with potential for salmon spawning and juvenile rearing will be the main target in 2017 and 2018.
