Habitat Evaluation and Restoration for Salmonids in the Shediac Bay Watershed

Recipient: Shediac Bay Watershed Association
Approved Amount: $5,000
Year Approved: 2016

This project will emphasize the restoration of one of the main spawning streams (McQuade Brook), and evaluating fish stocks and habitat conditions.  An elevated culvert on the McQuade Brook has seen the successful installation of a fish ladder. There’s some work left to be done on the fish ladder to improve efficiency. Shediac Watershed Association (SBWA) also see the need of clean-up and restoration work below and above the ladder site. Specifically, SBWA will install several rock weirs, digger logs and tree deflectors where needed.  Another component of the project is to evaluate habitat conditions, and possible areas that need restoration in the watershed. Evaluations will include habitat assessments and electrofishing. This project will expand the engagement and education of residents who have a vested interest in the health and use of the rivers.
