Characterization of the habitat of Atlantic salmon in rivers in the Chaleur region

Recipient: Chaleur Bay Watersheds
Approved Amount: $12,256
Year Approved: 2026

The project aims to characterize and protect Atlantic salmon habitat in the Jaquet River, with the goal of completing the inventory of salmon rivers in the region by 2027. Using a methodology developed with GINU and INRS, it will assess the Habitat Quality Index based on GIS analyses and drone imagery, while mapping threats. Population monitoring will be conducted using DNA analysis to confirm the presence and distribution of salmon. The study will also include an analysis of habitat connectivity through the evaluation of culverts to identify migration barriers. The results will guide concrete habitat improvement actions and will be shared with the community through various outreach activities.
