Broken Brooks: Assessing and Remediating Culverts in the Petitcodiac and Memramcook River Watersheds.

Recipient: Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance
Approved Amount: $16,500
Year Approved: 2017

Culverts are a significant source of reduced habitat connectivity due to inappropriate design, improper installation, or poor maintenance. This can result in limited or restricted access to important upper reaches that host highly oxygenated waters important for aquatic life cycles. The PWA has spent the past three years gaining experience and recognition as a leader in culvert assessment and remediation work in Atlantic Canada. In 2017-2018, the PWA hopes to remediate 21 pre-determined sites in the Petitcodiac watershed, complete 50 culvert assessments in the data deficient Memramcook watershed, and provide training to groups wishing to conduct culvert assessment in their region.  Projected benefits are baseline knowledge of habitat connectivity in the Memramcook River watershed and over 80 kilometers of restored access to important aquatic habitat in the Petitcodiac River watershed. The assessment and remediation of barrier culverts is one of the PWA’s major contributions to this larger narrative of Atlantic salmon recovery in the Bay of Fundy.
