Atlantic salmon conservation in the Innu communities of the North Shore by promoting indigenous traditional knowledge. Year 2 of a 3 year commitment.

The objective of this project is to promote Atlantic salmon conservation in seven Innu communities of the North Shore by recognizing the value of traditional native knowledge (TNK). With this project, the AMIK wants to restore Atlantic salmon in cooperation with the communities in order to collect more exact data on the species, on the extent of fishing operations by making a diagnostic of management techniques used in the communities. Then, the implementation of model management techniques will be an objective, based on the requests of the communities. The project will serve to educate and engage the communities’ population in salmon conservation, by sharing and knowledge in the primary and secondary school levels and in community meetings. The targeted audience are the populations of seven Innu communities of the North Shore. More specifically, the project activities will target band councils, fisheries coordinators, elders, primary students (5^th and 6^th grades) and high school students, as well as salmon fishermen.
