Assessing and restoring aquatic connectivity in the central Nashwaak watershed

Recipient: Nashwaak Watershed Association
Approved Amount: $13,049 for 2019 (1st year of a 2 year project, total: $23,049)
Year Approved: 2019

In NWAI’s 3-year Action Plan, the assessment and improvement of aquatic connectivity within the Nashwaak Watershed was noted as a High Priority Action item. This project will build on NWAI’s successes over the last two years in assessing and improving fish passage through stream crossings within the watershed and engaging the local community. NWAI will take a comprehensive and collaborative approach to identify, prioritize, and restore barriers to fish passage using up-to-date tools and techniques, including the Nature Conservancy’s GIS “Barrier Assessment Tool”.

The objectives are to: continue to improve NWAI’s knowledge about the fragmentation of the watershed by surveying stream crossings; increase the amount of available upstream aquatic habitat by remediating barrier culverts; decrease the risk of damage to public infrastructure; and increase public awareness about aquatic connectivity. Data will be shared with the NBDTI and with the North Atlantic Aquatic Connectivity Collaborative.
