West River Sheet Habour liming and counting fence

Recipient: Nova Scotia Salmon Association
Approved Amount: $13,000
Year Approved: 2015

The project proposed herein (ASCF portion) is for the fabrication, installation, operation and maintenance of a seasonal adult salmon counting fence and trap in the West River-Sheet Harbour to further document the results of measures taken to mitigate the impacts of acidification upon returning adult Atlantic salmon.

An adult count of returning salmon on the West River remains one of the key missing pieces in the puzzle of Acid rain mitigation.

Adult salmon captured and their biological samples will be made available to other investigators for use in studies that are examining additional hypothesized contributors to declines in salmon production in the region (e.g., diseases, genetic changes to the population, etc.).  This leveraging will enable advances to be made in our understanding of the main drivers responsible for population declines, and permit us to focus our resources more efficiently on the primary problems requiring solutions.
