Watershed management/conservation plan – Muddy Bay Brook, Labrador

Recipient: NunatuKavut Community Council Inc.
Approved Amount: $32,000
Year Approved: 2021

NunatuKavut Community Council Inc. (NCC) is developing a comprehensive environmental management system that is incorporating not only freshwater ecosystems but surrounding terrestrial, estuary, and marine systems for greater overall management and conservation of resources, particularly Atlantic salmon.

The key objective of this project is to assist in the development of a watershed management/conservation plan for Muddy Bay Brook that will be used to direct conservation efforts within that watershed.  Similar to the survey activities and planning for Shinney’s Brook which helped inform community members in Port Hope Simpson about the importance of salmon habitat, Muddy Bay Brook was chosen as a focal watershed near the community of Cartwright.  Incorporation of Aboriginal Traditional Knowledge (ATK) and education to public stakeholders on how the conservation and management of resources benefits users will also be critical.
