Watershed Characteristics and Geomorphological Study – Kouchibouguac and Kouchibouguacis Watersheds

Recipient: Greater Kouchibouguac Watershed Association
Approved Amount: $14,000
Year Approved: 2025

GKWA, in collaboration with O’Sullivan Ecohydraulics and GINU, will conduct a focused habitat assessment within the Greater Kouchibouguac watershed, specifically targeting the Kouchibouguacis and Kouchibouguac rivers. This project aims to refine our understanding of habitat quality and availability, thereby optimizing Atlantic Salmon restoration efforts. To achieve this, the team will analyze historical aerial imagery, some dating back to the 1920s, to differentiate between natural and human-induced erosion and deposition patterns. Through the development of detailed models, the project will identify the key drivers of erosion within the watershed. Finally, identified high-risk sites will be ground-truthed, potentially in the 2026-27 season, to validate the findings. The results of this analysis will provide crucial insights, pinpointing areas where targeted restoration interventions are most necessary to enhance Atlantic Salmon habitat.
