Restoring Resilient Salmon Habitat in the Greater Kouchibouguac Watershed

The Greater Kouchibouguac Watershed Association will carry out targeted habitat enhancement in the Kouchibouguac and Kouchibouguacis watersheds to address key limiting factors for Atlantic salmon, including siltation, warm temperatures, and low flows. Restoration actions will include groundwater‑promotion features, silt traps, erosion‑control structures, riparian canopy recovery, and temporary shading to expand and strengthen cold‑water refuges and improve spawning and rearing habitat. These efforts will be supported by sediment‑source identification, aquatic habitat and water‑quality surveys, long‑term monitoring of priority reaches, and ground‑truthing of cold‑water patches identified through thermal imagery. Together, these activities will enhance habitat quality, increase watershed resilience, and contribute to the long‑term recovery of Atlantic salmon.
