Restoring and Modeling Erosion Zones for Wild Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) in the Nashwaak Watershed

The Nashwaak Watershed Association Inc. proposes a two‑year, watershed‑wide project to protect and enhance Atlantic salmon habitat in the Nashwaak River by integrating erosion monitoring, riparian restoration, and landowner engagement. Building on more than a decade of restoration through NWAI’s Natural Edge Program, the project will update the last geomorphic assessment completed in 2016 by collecting new erosion data in collaboration with the University of New Brunswick, identifying erosion‑sensitive salmon reaches, and implementing targeted riparian plantings. By addressing key limiting factors such as bank instability, fine sedimentation, and loss of riparian cover, the initiative will reduce sediment loading, improve spawning and rearing conditions, support species‑at‑risk recovery, and establish a baseline dataset to guide long‑term watershed management and restoration decisions.
