Restoration of Porters Brook and post-removal monitoring, 2026
Recipient: Nashwaak Watershed Association Inc.
Approved Amount: $5,000
Year Approved: 2026
The Porters Brook culvert on Nashwaak West Road, located upstream of an important salmonid holding pool, was removed in 2024 to restore full fish passage. The site was re‑sloped to natural contours and reconstructed with step‑pools using boulders, cobble, and sediment, enabling upstream movement. From 2025–2027, the Nashwaak Watershed Association Inc. is monitoring fish passage and restoring riparian habitat using locally sourced native trees, shrubs, and grasses in accordance with a 2022 restoration plan. Post‑construction monitoring in 2026–2027 will assess project success through water temperature and quality measurements, eDNA analysis, electrofishing surveys, CABIN sampling, and flow monitoring.
