Presence of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) of Ungava bay, Nunavik, in the Koksoak system

Recipient: FaunENord
Approved Amount: $25,000 for 2016 (2nd year of 2-year project; total: $50,000)
Year Approved: 2016

With Inuit traditional knowledge, with this project we want to preserve the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Koksoak and Aux Mélèzes Rivers watersheds by delineating the distribution of the species in these rivers and by developing a series of recommendations. Lack of knowledge on the species distribution has negative effects on the adequate conservation of Atlantic salmon in this area. Recommendations from this project can be used by the Société Makvik as part of its activities in CCCPPP. In addition, with this project we can develop regional expertise by adapting theoretical notions developed from the southern salmon rivers for these big northern rivers and also identify, for the species conservation, other needs for salmon rivers in Nunavik.
