Monitoring and studying salmon populations and their habitat and inventory and characterization of bridges and culverts along rivers

Recipient: Regroupement Gestionnaires Rivières à Saumon de la Baie-des-Chaleurs
Approved Amount: $9,000
Year Approved: 2019

Working in cooperation with the Department of Forests, Wildlife and Parks (MFFP) to monitor salmon river populations and habitats, the Regroupement Gestionnaires Rivières à Saumon de la Baie-des-Chaleurs (RGRSBC), which includes the Société de restauration et de gestion de la Nouvelle (SRGN), the Société Cascapédia, l’Association des pêcheurs sportifs des rivières Cascapédia (APSRC), the Association des pêcheurs sportifs de la Bonaventure (APSB), will put in place a team of professionals whose mission will be to build the necessary knowledge for an efficient management of those fish populations.

Knowledge will be gathered by identifying and locating spawning sites, counting and characterizing culverts and identifying potential problem sites with regards to habitat quality for targeted species. This major effort, at the watershed level of these four major rivers of Baie des Chaleurs, will help us target the most beneficial management actions for the resource and act appropriately on roundtables (TGIRT, Tables Faune) where we sit.

The RGRSBC will contact a well-known expert to make sure the protocol is adequate. The RGRSBC will also contact the Department of Forests, Wildlife and Parks (MFFP) to make sure the protocol is adequate and meets the department’s requirements.
