Monitoring and restoration of salmon and sea trout in the Sainte-Marguerite River
Recipient: Association rivière Sainte Marguerite
Approved Amount: $18,300 for 2026 (1st year of 3-year project; Total: $54,900)
Year Approved: 2026
The Sainte-Marguerite River Association, in collaboration with the MELCCFP, the INRS, and the UQAC, is conducting several essential monitoring studies on the Sainte-Marguerite Principale and Nord Est rivers to better understand and protect populations of Atlantic salmon and anadromous brook trout. The project includes estimating smolt downstream migration using rotary traps and capture-mark-recapture methods, acoustic tagging of young salmon to study their survival at sea, capturing smolts to support a stocking restoration program, and using DNA as an alternative inventory method. This work makes it possible to assess population health, anticipate the return of adult spawners, and adapt habitat management and conservation measures.
