Jacquet River Salmon Restoration Project

Recipient: Village of Belledune
Approved Amount: $5,000
Year Approved: 2013

The project has a number of components including: 1) a newly constructed Atlantic salmon interpretation centre, 2) raising and releasing 2,500 young salmonids each year, 3) hiring 8 staff to be available during the day for monitoring and public education and security at night to prevent poaching, and 4) the placement of a metal barrier to restrict salmon who wish to spawn from proceeding upstream. This is done until a critical mass of fish is present. At this point the fish are released all at once giving them a better chance to reach the spawning beds.
