Indian Bay River Salmon Identification & Population Health
IBEC will collect count data regarding wild Atlantic Salmon returning to the watershed to spawn and compare the 2019 count data collected with data from the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Data will be collected with the use of an underwater camera placed in the same location as the previous two seasons. The camera will be installed in Indian Bay River, a “Class 4” scheduled salmon river, providing excellent data for comparison.
During the 2018 season, large numbers of Fry and Parr were counted. IBEC is curious to see if those numbers will increase, or if more Grilse will appear in 2019. Also, with the short angling season due to river closures in Newfoundland in 2018 (fluctuating water levels and high temperatures), IBEC is curious to see if that too would allow for an increase in the numbers of returning Grilse in the coming year.
