Grassroots Conservation in Action Project

Recipient: Richmond Bay Watershed Association Inc.
Approved Amount: $5,000
Year Approved: 2013

This project will focus on stream, riparian zone corridor and upland management strategies to restore the ecological health of watersheds. With support from farmers and landowners, 3,000 native tree species and shrubs will be planted along stream banks and expanded buffer zones. To restore sediment impacted streams and to improve in-stream habitats, 2 km of in-stream restoration activities will be carried out including construction of 2,000 sq feet of brush matting, excavation of 2 sediment basins, removal of 1 in-stream culvert, addition of in-stream cover structures, and flood management efforts to naturally control the effects of erosion and runoff. All activities would be supported by various public relation activities. Such efforts can serve to improve the many ecological functions of stream channels and riparian zones that serve to preserve, protect, or enhance habitat for Atlantic salmon on Prince Edward Island.
