Foundation Knowledge Building for Future PEI Salmon

Recipient: Abegweit Conservation Society
Approved Amount: $15,000
Year Approved: 2016

Recent research completed by Laval University identified a different genetic cluster of Atlantic salmon in North Lake (NLC) compared to other populations within the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This project will investigate life history values for the NLC Atlantic salmon population with the implication that this unique genetic cluster could have differing life history values with regards to spawning schedules and migration patterns. Project objectives include: installation of a fish fence to monitor movement of returning Atlantic salmon into North Lake Creek, installation of fyke nets to monitor the movement of smolt and allow collection of genetic material from nearby populations quantifying the extent of the unique genetic cluster. Community engagement will be fostered through a family fun day focused on the ecology of Atlantic salmon and volunteer opportunities in monitoring the fish fence.
