Fly casting and Fly tying for youth

In 2026, the Salmon Preservation Association for the Waters of Newfoundland (SPAWN) will visit multiple schools in Corner Brook, Curling, Stephenville, and Pasadena NL to introduce youth to fly fishing, teach them about conservation, fish handling, knots, river based stewardship, fly tying.

The program will be designed to introduce youth to Atlantic salmon, the importance of conservation, habitat, threats to species and the role that youth can play in the survival and protection of Atlantic salmon.

They will offer fly casting and conservation lessons to youth on a daily basis throughout the spring in various schools. They will also hold weekly fly tying classes for youth, 36 fly casting sessions and reach approximately 1080 youth. An additional 30 fly tying sessions for youth will reach approximately 300 youth

At the end of each session SPAWN will give 1/2 of the rods away, and 1/2 of the fly tying vises to youth that attend the sessions (instructors will determine a fair way to distribute them). The remainder of the equipment will stay with SPAWN for use in future instructional sessions.
