Fish way reconstruction and improvement at McDonald Fall on Nipissis River.
Recipient: Conseil Innu Takuaikan Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam (ITUM)
Approved Amount: $35,000
Year Approved: 2015
A fish way was built at McDonald Fall in 1969, but because of major design problems since its construction, it is nonoperational for salmon run.
This project will facilitate and accelerate salmon run in Nipissis River, reduce injuries and increase the vitality of salmons reaching the spawning grounds, ensure that all salmons who reach McDonald Fall can get to the spawning grounds upstream, reduce poaching at the base of the fall, and ultimately increase salmon population productivity in Nipissis River. An increase of salmon population can therefore be expected in the short term and medium term.
