Farmers Helping Fish

Recipient: Kennebecasis Watershed Restoration Committee
Approved Amount: $20,000
Year Approved: 2025

The KWRC has long worked in collaboration with agriculture landowners to improve riparian health on their farms while also improving aquatic ecosystem connectivity. This project will look at farms within the Millstream sub-watershed, a key tributary to the Kennebecasis River. Near the headwaters of Sharp Brook are a couple of large farms and we want to work with the O’Neil farm and improve conditions across almost 1000m of this 2nd order stream that is home to brook trout and salmon parr. The work will include enhancing two culvert structures to provide better hydraulic flow and fish passage, stabilizing two eroding stream banks, and planting a riparian setback that will reduce sediment and nutrient transfer into the brook and provide shade to help buffer stream temperatures through the summer months. The KWRC will also monitor stream temperatures using temperature loggers, conduct electro-fishing surveys at three locations on Sharp Brook, and complete a benthic survey using CABIN protocols.
