Develop Habitat Conservation Plans and Restoration for Rivers in Bay St. George

Recipient: Bay St.George South Area Development
Approved Amount: $25,000
Year Approved: 2018

This project developed habitat conservation/improvement plans for three rivers in Bay St. George; Middle Barachois, Little Barachois, and Flat Bay Brooks. Development of the plans involved compiling existing available habitat information and conducting surveys of tributary streams to compile an inventory of habitat factors that could or are affecting salmon migration. The factors influencing salmon production were identified. These factors include but are not limited to; 1) natural and man-made barriers to fish passage such as waterfalls, debris, logging, beaver dams, culverts, and collapsed bridges; and 2) natural and man-made habitat degradation such as bank destabilization, erosion, and silting. Some obstructions were removed. The location of spawning habitats was mapped.
