Engaging the youth in salmon enhancement activities

Recipient: Gespe'gewaq Mi'Gmaq Resource Council
Approved Amount: $24,000
Year Approved: 2010

The vision of the organization is to assist First Nation communities within the Bay of Chaleur by creating awareness and understanding and gathering support to further sustainable natural resource management. We see a future where we can work together in the bay, manage our resources and have a greater say in how they are managed, while at the same time building cultural bridges with the common goal of effective natural resource management practices. This project will engage a youth group, made up of 12 students from the Grade 7 and 8 levels, from Alaqsitew Gitpu School in Listuguj, to learn about the historical and current native and non-native salmon management practices. The goal of this project is to invest in young people’s skills and capabilities to act as powerful advocates of responsible resource management by building a foundation for our youth with which they will strengthen their identities and values regarding salmon conservation and management.
