Conserving Salmon and Creating Connectivity in the Belleisle Watershed
The purpose of ‘Conserving Salmon and Creating Connectivity in the Belleisle Watershed.’ Is to restore access through culverts and structures identified as barriers to fish passage in the Belleisle watershed and conduct tagging to further assess salmon population abundance, distribution, and migration to measure the effectiveness of restoration efforts and gauge population numbers and provide vital data for conservation efforts. Specifically, the nature of this project is to remove barriers in culverts/structures and restore open access to fish habitat for salmonids in the watershed. And survey and tag salmon to collect population information like migratory behaviors, growth/mortality rates and habitat preferences to aid future projects.
The specific objectives of this project are to.
1.Restoring connectivity at culverts and structures assessed as barriers and provide open access to fish habitat in the Belleisle watershed;
2.Conduct tagging and salmonid population assessments to measure the effectiveness of restoration efforts, gauge population numbers and provide information for future fisheries projects;
3.Identify and engage the stakeholder(s) interested in mitigating barriers to fish passage and assisting in recovery of Atlantic salmon an aquatic species at risk; and,
4.Conduct educational outreach to raise awareness of barriers to fish passage and Atlantic salmon conservation and stewardship in the watershed.
