Conservation of Atlantic Salmon through Youth Engagement and Community Stewardship

In partnership with Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations, Intervale will increase public knowledge and awareness of the importance of conserving wild Atlantic Salmon and salmon habitat in NL and will complete a habitat assessment of the upper Dribble Brook that drains into Flat Bay Brook.

Intervale staff will give at least 10 presentations, targeting 200 youth in schools and communities, about threats to salmon in local rivers and what can be done to improve salmon populations and protect in-stream salmon habitat. Using an established network of experienced instructors and curriculum, Intervale will teach skills and best practices through 10 or more hands-on fly tying and stewardship workshops targeting 90 youth and adults, designed to motivate people to reduce harm to salmon and become river stewards. Intervale will promote Atlantic salmon conservation through social media and their website and distribute the Living Rivers newsletter and the installation of seven new trailhead guest book boxes at popular angling areas on the west coast.
In collaboration with several partners, Intervale will deliver two youth multi-day workshops in 2026 and participate in other community activities in western Newfoundland.
Intervale is also providing guidance to other conservation groups and will visit their areas to conduct school presentations.
