Characterization of the actual habitat of Atlantic salmon in the Mitis and Matane River watersheds

The FQSA and its partners aim to strengthen the protection of several tributaries of the Mitis River by using environmental DNA to demonstrate that they are used by Atlantic salmon. Since these waterways, though important for juveniles, do not enjoy the same level of protection as officially designated salmon rivers, the project aims to document their occupancy, define colonization boundaries, and recommend enhanced conservation measures, such as widening riparian zones or improving culverts. Physicochemical data will also be collected to better characterize the habitats. Concurrently, sampling will continue in the tributaries of the Matane River. This project is essential for better understanding the distribution of salmon in Quebec and ensuring the sustainability of this declining species.
