Characterization and restoration of habitat and thermal refuges in the Gespe’gewa’gi and Wolastokuk salmon rivers
This project aims to identify, characterize, and restore thermal refuges essential to salmon in the Wolastokuk River, using data from thermal aerial surveys conducted in 2024–2025. It includes field analyses, the installation of monitoring instruments, and confirmation of salmon use of these refuges. The data collected will guide targeted restoration actions—vegetation restoration, bank stabilization, and improvements to shade and cold-water circulation—to strengthen habitat resilience in the face of warming. Conducted in collaboration with AGHAMW, the Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk First Nation, OBVNEBSL, the Saumon Rimouski ZEC, the FQSA, and UQAR, the project will produce maps, reports, and recommendations to enable sustainable management of freshwater ecosystems and better protection of salmon.
