Barnaby River Watershed Recreational Fishing Management Plan

Recipient: Miramichi River Environmental Assessment Committee
Approved Amount: $14,000
Year Approved: 2019

With ASCF support in 2015, MREAC completed an Atlantic Salmon habitat assessment on the Barnaby River.  Building on this foundation and the conclusions from this report, in 2019 MREAC will develop a recreational fishing management plan for this waterway. The Barnaby River, tributary of the Miramichi River, has a known Atlantic salmon run and some monitoring by MREAC and others has been completed.  It has locally known fishing pools but, as a smaller waterway, has not received the attention and fishing pressure of other Miramichi branches. The contribution the Barnaby makes to Atlantic Salmon fish stocks is poorly known. Fish habitat impacts include: a major highway, riverside municipalities, agriculture, industrial-scale cranberry production, industrial and private forestry operations.  In this planning exercise MREAC will engage the community, complete additional monitoring, determine limiting factors, implement short-term recommendations and provide a list of long-term recommendations for future consideration.
