Atlantic Salmon in the Welamukotuk/Oromocto River

Recipient: Oromocto River Watershed Association, Inc.
Approved Amount: $10,000
Year Approved: 2026

Atlantic salmon in the Oromocto River (Welamukotuk) are part of the endangered Outer Bay of Fundy population, and ongoing monitoring is essential to protect these remnant fish. Through closed‑site electrofishing, the project tracks salmon densities in historically healthy tributaries to guide future restoration work, support DFO’s data needs, and raise public awareness. Current efforts include habitat restoration, thermal‑refugia monitoring, and community education, with plans in 2026 to survey ten key sites, refresh temperature loggers, and share findings widely. Collaboration with the Maliseet Nation Conservation Council and Welamukotuk First Nation remains central, ensuring the work reflects the cultural significance of salmon and contributes to a broader Wolastoq management plan.
