Atlantic Salmon Habitat Restoration & Enhancement Phase 5 + Post-tropical Storm Fiona Recovery
In September, post-tropical storm Fiona caused tremendous damage to riparian buffers especially on the Pisquid River, Clark’s Creek, and parts of Vernon River. While HRA and Pisquid River Enhancement Project (PREP) with support from ECCC’s Habitat Stewardship Program through PEI Watershed Alliance (PEIWA) will continue implementing the recommendations from the Conservation Strategy for Atlantic Salmon on PEI (Guignion et al 2019), this project will focus on the assessment and amelioration of critical areas of Fiona’s damage so that access to these salmon restoration sites can be achieved. We will: maintain beaver-free zones on Pisquid and Clark’s; open salmon infrastructure access; remove blowdowns to restore fish access; excavate silt from sediment ponds that serve as holding pools, monitor water temperature and nitrate levels; continue salmon redd surveys and electrofishing; educate student employees, elementary school students, and landowners, acknowledge ASCF contributions via social media, and release the annual Hillsborough Tidings newsletter.
