Atlantic Salmon Habitat Restoration and Enhancement in Two PEI Watersheds

Recipient: Prince Edward Island Trappers’ Association
Approved Amount: $8,100
Year Approved: 2016

This project will take place in two specific areas in the Pisquid and Vernon River watersheds that still have Atlantic salmon. PEITA will: complete aquatic connectivity assessments to create 2 maps that prioritize remedial work. Beavers will be removed from beaver-free zones. We will install 1 km of brushmats to trap sediment and stabilize banks using gabion baskets, rock, filter fabric and wood structures. Alders will be patch cut in 8 areas and 1500 native trees and shrubs will be planted in riparian zones. We will install 40 cover structures, a minimum of 3 digger logs and 10 rock weirs to provide important habitat for salmon. We will also place river rock as a spawning substrate in 6 areas. We will complete electrofishing surveys in both watersheds. Water quality will be tested for nitrates and pesticides, and two new CABIN sites will be added to our monitoring regime.
