All united for the health of the salmon habitat in the Mitis River

The project aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the health of the Mitis River, where the salmon population is declining and current water quality monitoring is insufficient. It includes a first scientific component funded by the grant, involving water quality analysis at five stations, assessment of riparian zones, and a daily count of salmon transported from the Mitis-2 dam to Saint-Angèle-de-Mérici. This data will help identify sources of contamination and propose appropriate conservation measures. A second component, focused on citizen science, will engage volunteers and municipalities to visually document the river’s condition through standardized observations and photo panels. Together, these efforts will help guide essential conservation measures for the long-term survival of Atlantic salmon in the Mitis River.
