Adaptations in Atlantic salmon juvenile behaviour and health related to long-term habitat alterations
Recipient: Town of Holyrood
Approved Amount: $9,060 (1st year of 2-year grant, total: $19,220)
Year Approved: 2016
Research in Holy Cross Park (Mahers River) allows an entire river reach to be converted from flowing river habitat to a large pool for extended periods. The reaction of juvenile salmon to these fluctuations can be researched using a variety of innovative methods such as stable isotopes to monitor any change in feed behaviour/prey, passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags to monitor movement to/from the pool to upriver reaches, and radio telemetry to monitor movements throughout the system.
