Finalization of a management plan for the Chaleur Bay Watershed and Characterization of Atlantic salmon habitat in the Millstream and Aux Ormes Rivers

Recipient: Chaleur Bay Watersheds
Approved Amount: $10,000
Year Approved: 2025

The project is focussed on Millstream and Aux Ormes Rivers, which both contain two of the important populations of Atlantic salmon. The objective is to support the development of a management plan of the watershed.

• Initiatives 2024: The management plan objectives were identified, after two consultation meetings involving local partners. Efforts were focussed on understanding threats faced by aquatic habitats.
• Actions 2025-2026: The project aims to finalize the plan by identifying concrete steps. Key activities include habitats characterization with aerial images, drone field surveys in cooperation with GINU, and evaluation of the salmon populations distribution and density with electric fishing and environmental DNA tests. (ADNe).
The plan is to analyze the culvert’s condition with LiDAR data to identify barriers of the fish passage. Field visits will validate the results and identify the restoration work needed to improve habitats.
The project will also create awareness of salmon preservation on social media, at community events and as part of youth education, while inspiring similar initiatives in other areas. These efforts will complement projects focussed on salmon in Belle-Baie area.
