Conservation and restoration of cold-water tributaries in the Ouelle River watershed

Two major conservation initiatives are planned for the Ouelle River to protect thermal refuges and Atlantic salmon habitat, drawing on recent research and drone-based identification of cooling zones. The project aims to implement conservation measures in the sub-watersheds feeding the cold-water tributaries and to restore tributaries in warming zones, particularly those located upstream of pools and spawning grounds. To achieve this, the partners will form a working committee, characterize the targeted areas, meet with landowners to raise awareness and secure their commitment, then develop management plans, before moving on to an implementation phase. The ultimate goal is to ensure the stability of thermal refuges and the health of the Ouelle River and its tributaries, which are essential to salmon survival in the context of climate change.
