Assessing and restoring aquatic connectivity in the Nashwaak Watershed
This project builds on nine years of work by the Nashwaak Watershed Association Inc. to assess and improve fish passage and aquatic connectivity throughout the Nashwaak watershed. Using a collaborative approach with municipalities and provincial and federal agencies, the project surveys road–stream crossings, identifies and prioritizes fish passage barriers, maintains existing infrastructure, and supports landowners in remediation efforts. To date, NWAI has removed or remediated multiple major barriers, replaced key culverts, cleared blockages at over 35 crossings, and reopened hundreds of kilometres of upstream habitat for Atlantic salmon and other species. In 2026, the project will continue monitoring and maintaining existing structures, surveying additional crossings, and identifying new barriers to further improve habitat connectivity and watershed resilience.
