Watershed Resilience and Risk Mapping Initiative for IBoF and OBoF Salmon Rivers
The Hammond River Angling Association and Fort Folly Habitat Recovery are launching a collaborative, cross‑regional program to better understand how water chemistry affects Atlantic salmon health across the Outer and Inner Bay of Fundy, integrating Indigenous and Western science into a unified contaminant and nutrient monitoring effort. Using validated lab analyses and rapid field‑screening tools, the partners will measure key water‑quality parameters and track contaminants such as glyphosate across tributaries representing forestry, agricultural, and reference watersheds. Three coordinated sampling programs—runoff‑event sampling, before‑during‑after spray monitoring, and targeted grab sampling—will map where chemical inputs overlap with critical salmon habitat, with site selection guided by Mi’kmaw Traditional Knowledge and scientific habitat mapping. Results will be linked with eDNA detections, electrofishing data, redd surveys, and smolt‑wheel outputs to identify potential chemical stress zones and inform adaptive management, policy recommendations, and future restoration planning.
