Presence of Atlantic salmon of Ungava Bay, Nunavik, in Koksoak system

Recipient: FaunENord
Approved Amount: $25,000
Year Approved: 2015

The goal of this project is to use Inuit traditional knowledge to ensure Atlantic salmon conservation (Salmo salar) in Koksoak and Aux Mélèzes rivers watersheds by an exact delineation of species distribution in those watercourses and by developing a series of recommendations. Adequate Atlantic salmon conservation of in this area is compromised by a lack of knowledge on species distribution. The Société Makivik will use the recommendations from this project in its activities in CCCPP among other things. Also, with this project, regional expertise can be developed by adapting theoretical notions based on salmon rivers in the south for those big northern rivers, in addition to identifying other needs for Nunavik salmon rivers on a species conservation basis.
