Linking Equivalent Cut Areas with Atlantic salmon habitat quality in the Restigouche River watershed

Recipient: Conseil de gestion du bassin versant de la rivière Restigouche
Approved Amount: $11,000 for 2019-20 (1st year of 2-year project, total: $23,000)
Year Approved: 2020

This project aims to carry out a study on the impact of the size and distribution of logging on Atlantic Salmon habitat. It aims to adapt the calculation tool “Equivalent cut areas” (ECA) for the Restigouche River Basin territory initiated in 2010-2012 by our organization in order to update with current data and evaluate the impact of different percentages of ECA on water regime and salmon habitat. As part of a master’s project, this project will also make it possible to synthesize forest harvesting methods for the two jurisdictions of the Restigouche watershed territory (Quebec and New Brunswick) and to develop mitigation measures.  In addition, CGBVRR will coordinate a workshop to bring together researchers responsible for three forestry projects funded by the Foundation. This workshop will facilitate collaboration and information sharing between researchers.
