Development of a methodology for assessing the hydro-geomorphological sensitivity associated with logging in the watersheds of the salmon rivers of Gaspésie and Bas-Saint-Laurent

Recipient: Fédération québécoise pour le saumon atlantique
Approved Amount: $25,000 for 2019-2020
Year Approved: 2020

This project will conduct a literature review on: hydrogeomorphological and biological risks associated with forest harvesting; standards for minimizing the negative impacts of forest harvesting on the hydromorphological characteristics of streams and aquatic fauna; watershed assessment methods; and ecological risk analysis grids related to forest harvesting. The project will also propose, for the two regions under study, grids and/or decision trees and/or indicators to assess sensitivity as a decision-making tool based on the literature review and with the support of experts in biophysical sciences.  Risk analysis, grids and decision support tools will take into account geomorphological features of watersheds, forestry operations and forest hydrology considerations as well as river habitat of salmon.
