Characterizing spawning areas on Ouelle River

Recipient: Organisme de bassins versants de Kamouraska, L’Islet et Rivière-du-Loup (OBAKIR)
Approved Amount: $10,000
Year Approved: 2016

This project consists in characterizing spawning areas habitat in the Grande rivière sector, which is the main affluent with Atlantic salmon spawning areas, for their adequate protection and restoration. The study area is distributed on approximately 18 km and all potential spawning grounds will be localized and carefully characterized. All relevant information found in the field will be noted and considered in the report. This information will then be mapped in a digital format (GIS) and transferred to Google Earth, to obtain an interactive reference tool. This is an essential guiding tool for protection and conservation actions of the salmon spawning area; it will also be used to create awareness among users and to plan actions with partners. Steps will be taken to access historical data to improve the final report.
