Project Title: Salmon Index River Identification
Project location: Nunatsiavut, Newfoundland & Labrador
Approved Grant Amount for 2008: $12,000.00
Summary:
Baseline data on salmon populations in Nunatsiavut has not been well established, and there are many salmon stocks, of which little is known. This project identified potential index rivers within Nunatsiavut, to serve as baseline information that will direct future research, and conservation and management strategies. Eventually, a variety of index rivers may form the basis for salmon and other anadromous fish stock management in Nunatsiavut. Index rivers have proven to be particularly useful for monitoring salmon stock abundance and population characteristics in other regions (ex. Gulf). The parties will eventually investigate feasibility of establishing a salmon counting fence, or other salmon stock management strategy based upon results from this study.
