Recipient: NunatuKavut Community Council in partnership with Salmonid Council of Newfoundland and Labrador
Project Title: To demonstrate the effectivness of trap nets to conserve MSW salmon in the Labrador NunatuKavut Fishery.
Project Location: Black Tickle, Labrador
Approved Grant Amount for 2011: $10,000
Summary:
Preliminary results from the trap indicated that the catch rates have been low despite monitored rivers nearby (sand hill river) having record breaking returns, and catch rates experienced by members in the net fishery in the area. To date our fishers have caught 44 salmon using the trap, and none had to be released due to being a MSW fish.
Since September the majority of fish were caught in late July and only 2 MSW fish were caught and released with minimal harm.
Taking measurements and scale samples from fish caught in the trap net.
